Visit Orlando's Gatorland
January 12, 2009
Over the holiday break, my family had the opportunity to visit Gatorland in Orlando. I haven't been there since I was very young and it has certainly changed over the years. If you are looking for something to do other than visit the expensive theme parks, you might want to consider spending an afternoon at Gatorland.
As Florida residents, we are used to occasionally seeing an alligator sunning itself on the banks of neighboring ponds. However, if you are looking for a guaranteed sighting of potentially hundreds of alligators, stop on by Gatorland. In fact, its entrance is in the shape of an Alligator mouth and entertained our children while we waited in line to purchase our tickets.

Once inside, we walked along raised platforms - which were carefully fenced off - over pools and a large pond containing all sizes of alligators. We arrived in time to watch the "Gator Jumparoo" show where handlers coaxed alligators to jump out of the water for food. It was hugely popular and every child watched in amazement.
For $2.00, families can ride the Express Railroad which takes you past alligator displays and over water ways. After the train ride, our children were excited to experience the new Splash Park (so be sure to bring a change of clothes). Next to the Splash Park is a playground and a petting zoo which will also keep your kids entertained for the better part of the afternoon. Once the kids had their fill of the Splash Park and zoo, we went on a walk around Gatorland. It took us past well fenced off crocodile enclosures and on a board walk through a beautiful alligator and bird sanctuary. Be sure to being your camera, you will truly see the beauty of natural Florida here.
Tickets at the gate are $22.00 for adults and $14.99 for children. However, you will save a small percentage if you buy your tickets online. Also, keep a look out for special Florida resident deals. One just passed for early January but they are bound to come again. And if you are thinking about stopping by late afternoon, rates are discounted later in the day.
