Take Your Littlest Athlete to Accesible, Local Sporting Events
November 20, 2008
Do you have children who can't seem to get enough of one particular sport? Wouldn't it be fun to go to a game with your pre-schooler? But maybe you're thinking the cost of tickets or overwhelming size of the event just isn't practical right now. Well, I've got an idea. There are endless opportunities to attend a sporting event right here in the Tampa Bay area, and they cost a whole lot less than professional sports. Have you thought about attending a college or university athletic event?
Last weekend, my family found itself at Saint Leo University watching a Volleyball game. I never expected my 5 year old and 2 year old sons to have as much fun as they did. The stands were full, the game was exciting and everyone was cheering (which meant my boys got to use their outside voices a LOT). That's when it dawned on me: who needs Bucs tickets when there are great games to watch at a local college? Here are some reasons why I think college (or even high school) level athletic events are perfect for our youngest athletes.
Good seats: The best way for your child to stay engaged and enjoy the game is to really see it well. At college athletic events, your family can sit right up front, enjoy the excitement of the fans and actually see everything going on in front of them. Plus there is usually room to get down to walk around a bit and come back to the game at your leisure.
Spontaneity: With college sports, you rarely need to buy your tickets ahead of time. That way, if too many in your family are "napless", you can save it for another day.
Smaller crowds: The large crowds and loud music at professional sporting events can be very over stimulating and potentially exhausting for your children. College events are often much less crowded which will allow the kids to relax and enjoy the event that much more.
The price: Ticket costs are usually minimal at college games. So, if your littlest athletes suddenly fall apart (napless or not) during the game, you don't have to feel too badly about leaving for home at half time.
Are you ready to check out a game with your family now? Here is a list of local colleges and universities you might want to consider. Each school is linked to their athletic department's website; from there you will find their sports teams and their schedules.
Saint Leo University
University of Tampa
Florida College
Eckerd College
Florida Southern
USF (Note: Don't expect all of USF's events to follow the rules I've listed above. Their recent popularity may mean expensive tickets and large crowds after all.)
Don't forget to look into athletic events at your local high schools too! They can be just as fun for your family but even closer and easier to access on a regular basis.
